MASINT

The acronym for measurement and signature intelligence, MASINT is the technical intelligence collection discipline of monitoring indicators to establish a pattern so analysts can study the data over the long term and spot potentially significant, tell-tale changes. The term covers a wide spectrum of remote sensors, such as those resembling javelins which were dropped over the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam War to collect seismic evidence of troop movements; devices concealed as tree stumps to count aircraft rotations at strategic airfields located far from cities and protected by dense cloud cover; and air-sniffers designed to sample the atmosphere in the Himalayas to detect Chinese nuclear tests.
